A researcher pulls vials from a low temperature storage unit.

The BIOR manages a centralized, secure, 24/7-monitored freezer farm for biological storage, as well as a facility for acquiring, processing and analyzing biospecimens. Any biospecimens remaining after analysis from PI-initiated studies can be used in the future if approved by a research oversight board. An Honest Broker is on staff to help with control and access to patient information and/or deidentification.

While the Biorepository Core’s primary service is biological sample storage, it can also:

  • Isolate plasma, serum or PBMCs from whole blood
  • Store blood derivative samples and tissue samples in ultralow-temperature storage units
  • Store pathological slides and blocks at scientific room temperature. Paraffin blocks can be stored in ultralow temperature freezers for long-term preservation per request.
  • Create project databases for future usage
  • Provide letters of support for grant applications
  • Provide consultants for project setup, budgeting and execution
